Laura Winter

A Curious Incident

A rocket,

perhaps a bullet,

chatters up the night-

stars take no notice.

As we walk across

the crowded sky

on our fingers

and search for a switch,

the shell game burns up

space junk (?).

Neighboring lights flicker on

as the commotion dies

and distantly close

a fugitive falls.

Laura Winter lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband, visual artist, Brad Winter. She is author of poetry collections, broadsides and performance projects. A number of her poems have been translated into multiple languages, set to music and performed as song cycles. Laura enjoys performing with musicians where she uses the language of poetry as an instrument. Occasionally TAKE OUT, a bag-a-zine featuring visual art, writing and music, is published. Winter’s US-Mexico borderlands collaboration with photographer Terri Warpinski, Liminal Matter: Fences and Liminal Matter: Traces is in numerous special collections such as Stanford University Library, Amherst College and Yale University.
